(October 25, 2012 – Springfield, Mo.) Better Business Bureau’s semi-annual Secure Your ID Day was held October 20 and was attended by more than 700 vehicles, safely destroying nearly 20 tons of material.

The steady flow of consumers and businesses brought both new and returning participants to the event held in the Great Southern Bank Operations Center on south Glenstone. Participants were provided with information from the event sponsors as well as BBB and the FTC.

“We are honored to be able to provide this service free of charge to the community to do our part in promoting identity protection,” said Judy Mills, president and CEO of BBB serving Southwest Missouri. “The fact that this event continues to grow means there is an ever-lasting need for a safe way to destroy sensitive materials.”

The nearly 20 tons of material that was safely destroyed on-site by Cintas Document Management will be recycled and turned into products such as paper towels. According to information provided from Cintas, the event’s environmental impact is impressive. The event saved: 296 trees, 35 barrels of oil, 121,800 gallons of water and 52 cubic yards of landfill.

According to a 2011 report from Javelin Strategy and Research it found 8.1 million Americans became victims of ID theft, resulting in the loss of $37 billion.  Those who suffered from identity faced higher consequences, the study found. The average out-of-pocket loss nearly doubled, going from $387 to $631 per incident.

BBB will be holding its next Secure Your ID Day on April 20, 2013. To be added to the organization’s reminder e-mail list please call 417-380-5075.
